These compact IMF speakers have been a great success. Despite the opinions of skeptics, Compact has shown that there is a refined layer of recipients of hi-fi services who do not judge the advantages of a speaker system on the basis of cost in relation to size. The advantages of using the same attention to design details in and cult IMF RSPM MKIV for housings with modest proportions as the Compact is a great achievement of the company. This required the implementation of a speaker set, which must necessarily be made qualitatively like the bigger brothers.

IMF Compact Il uses a bextrene unit with a defined membrane surface and pitch to ensure uniform medium and low frequency performance. The complement is a silk dome tweeter, the whole unit is integrated by low loss and phase correction feedback systems. The bass effect is maintained by a critically tuned and optimally attenuated reflection housing (see illustration). Indeed, if the dimensions of the housing or controllers in the Compact II were larger, it would not be possible to achieve such a smooth and extended response without resorting to an additional separate mid-range device and the association of complex electronics. In general, the Compact II sounds much better than its size, providing wide dispersion and remarkable extension of low frequencies, and is an excellent value for space.

Thanks to the Super-Compact, the enclosure size is sufficient to accommodate a bass unit with a free air resonance of around 25 Hz. The figure illustrates the resistive load conditions which, without compromising the exceptional bass response, suppress the system from "conical convolution" from unwanted subsonic signals. The medium range is isolated in its own short transmission line, and this unit together with the tweeter is similar to those we used in our Studio TLS 50 and ALS 40 loudspeakers.

It was also decided to adopt the same complex and costly configuration of the crossover network and the mirror image as in these larger models. This results in two important advantages. The internal crossover network has been developed as an optimal filter without compromise for the drive units used and as such provides minimal coloration and thus a maximum sense of acoustic transparency. Secondly, it ensures that the Super Compact phase and dispersion characteristics are essentially identical to the TLS 50 and ALS 40 characteristics. Therefore, all three models are compatible for four-channel applications. Studies show that unlike speakers cannot be used for four channels more than unmatched speakers are acceptable for stereo. Even the choice of all loudspeakers from the same manufacturer does not guarantee compatibility, unless the loudspeakers have the same phase relation throughout the range and substantially similar integrated performance. For the future, IMF in Super-Compact has ensured this compatibility and predicts that many of these speakers will complement IMF Studio or ALS 40 speakers for rear channel information. So a potential customer can now buy without fear of a lack of spare parts with us.

In terms of sound - the low frequencies are extremely elongated for their enclosure sizes, but they are smooth and free from exaggeration of "one-tone bass". The middle and treble have a sense of "gloss" and continuity - instead of the sound of many speakers working in a box. Despite the moderate performance, there is no distortion or coloring, so listening at low as well as high levels gives a sense of balance that reveals everything that is worth doing in a wide range of source signal. This set, like every model of this company, is worthy of the best amplifiers and really the best auxiliary devices.
